42DOAT Platform is a highly-curated, growing collection of Arabic type elements for designers and artists, a digital visual archive for exploration, inspiration, study, and research.
منصة ٤٢ يوم هي أرشيف متنامٍ ومنتقى بعناية لعناصر الخط العربي موجّه للمصممين والفنانين، أرشيف بصري رقمي للاستكشاف والإلهام والدراسة والبحث.
The project started in 2021 as an online open creative challenge, inviting designers and artists to reimagine the letters and numbers of the Arabic language. One element is introduced each day for 42 days.
We initiate the challenge by sharing all the needed information and details; the challenge calendar, and a set of pre-set custom hashtags. Participants then share their artworks on social media. Our engagement along with curating and sharing their artworks on our accounts, creates a vibrant wave of creativity across various platforms.
The project provided a free online space for exploring the art and design of Arabic language elements. Each piece showcased a unique perspective that reflected the creator's personality, style, and craftsmanship.
بدأ المشروع في عام ٢٠٢١ كتحدٍّ إبداعي مفتوح عبر الإنترنت، يدعو المصممين والفنانين إلى إعادة تصور حروف وأرقام اللغة العربية، عنصر واحد يومياَ لمدة ٤٢ يوماً.
نُطلِق التحدي من خلال مشاركة جميع المعلومات والتفاصيل اللازمة، تقويم التحدي ومجموعة من الهاشتاجات المخصّصة مسبقاً. ثم ينشر المشاركون أعمالهم على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي. ويسهم تفاعلنا، إلى جانب تنسيق أعمالهم وإعادة مشاركتها على حساباتنا، في خلق موجة نابضة بالإبداع تمتد عبر مختلف المنصات.
وفّر المشروع مساحة رقمية حرّة لاستكشاف فنّ وتصميم عناصر اللغة العربية، حيث عكست كلُّ مشاركة منظوراً فريداً يجسّد شخصية المبتكر وأسلوبه وحِرَفيّته.
In 2023, we organized another edition of the challenge. During this edition, the limitations of using social media platforms, specifically Instagram, became remarkably noticeable.
These platforms are no longer suitable for hosting such creative activities, becoming ad-driven which has significantly reduced the reach of organic creative content. The hashtag system has also changed over the years, making it unreliable for managing and reviewing all published works, as well as effectively engaging with participants.
The idea of creating an independent platform for documentation and archiving started to take shape in late 2023. As it became clear that we needed to change how we manage the challenge and its submissions; shifting away from relying on social media algorithms and toward a dedicated space designed to serve the creative community on our own terms.
في عام ٢٠٢٣، نظّمنا نسخة أخرى من التحدّي، وخلال هذه النسخة تبيّن لنا بشكل واضح مدى محدودية الاعتماد على منصّات التواصل الاجتماعي، ولاسيّما إنستغرام.
لم تعْد هذه المنصّات ملائمة لاستضافة مثل هذه الأنشطة الإبداعية، إذ أصبحت تعتمد على الإعلانات بشكل متزايد، مما أدّى إلى تراجع كبير في وصول المحتوى الإبداعي الغير مدفوع. كما أن طريقة عمل الهاشتاغات قد تغيّرت على مرّ السنوات، فأصبح غير موثوق في تنظيم ومراجعة جميع الأعمال المنشورة، وكذلك في تحقيق تفاعل فعّال مع المشاركين.
بدأت فكرة إنشاء منصّة مستقلة للتوثيق والأرشفة تتشكّل في أواخر عام ٢٠٢٣. وقد أصبح واضحاً أننا بحاجة إلى تغيير طريقة إدارة التحدّي ومساهماته، والابتعاد عن الاعتماد على خوارزميات وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، والتوجّه نحو مساحة مخصّصة تُسهِم في خدمة المجتمع الإبداعي وفق معاييرنا الخاصة.
In 2024, we experimented with another form of creative activity by participating in the Hadath Al Khatt event, held in Egypt's New Administrative Capital.
We utilized a space in the exhibition area to create a digital, interactive experience that showcases project insights along with a carefully curated selection of creative works from the 2021 and 2023 challenges. Visitors were able to navigate through the works using an Arabic keyboard, allowing them to experience the richness of Arabic type design in a physical setting.
This experience reinforced our understanding of the amount of work required to properly document and archive all artworks. It also highlighted the impact that a well-curated presentation can have on audiences, strengthening our commitment to building a permanent home for these creations.
في عام ٢٠٢٤، جربنا نوعاً آخر من الأنشطة الإبداعية عبر مشاركتنا في فعالية "حدث الخط" التي أُقيمت في العاصمة الإدارية الجديدة في مصر.
استخدمنا مساحة في منطقة المعرض لإنشاء تجربة رقمية تفاعلية تُبرز معطيات المشروع، إلى جانب مجموعة منتقاة بعناية من الأعمال الإبداعية التي شاركت في تحدّيَي ٢٠٢١ و ٢٠٢٣. وتمكّن الزوّار من تصفّح هذه الأعمال باستخدام لوحة مفاتيح عربية، مما أتاح لهم اختبار ثراء تصميم عناصر الخط العربي في بيئة ملموسة.
عززت هذه التجربة إدراكنا لِكمية العمل اللازمة لتوثيق الأعمال الفنية وأرشفتها على نحو صحيح. كما سلطت الضوء على مدى تأثير العرض المُعدّ بعناية على الجمهور، مُرسِّخّاً التزامنا ببناء مساحة دائمة مخصصة لهذه الإبداعات.
Now in 2025, we are pleased to officially launch our platform to the public after two years of planning and developing this new chapter of the project. Through this platform, we aim to broaden the role of 42DOAT in advancing Arabic type design, support our creative community, inspire Arabic type designers globally, and redefine how future 42 Days of Arabic Type challenges are carried out.
الآن في عام ٢٠٢٥، يسعدنا أن نُطلق منصّتنا رسميّاً للجمهور بعد عامين من التخطيط والتطوير لهذا الفصل الجديد من المشروع. من خلال هذه المنصّة، نهدف إلى توسيع دورنا في تطوير الخط العربي، ودعم مجتمعنا الإبداعي، وإلهام مصممي الخطوط العربية عالمياً، وإعادة صياغة آلية تنفيذ تحديات ”٤٢ يوماً من الخط العربي“ في المستقبل.

42DOAT Challenge launched anonymously on Instagram in 2021 and gained major attention from the Arabic creative community before its creator was known.
جمعت نسختَي عامّي ٢٠٢١ و٢٠٢٣ من تحدّي ٤٢ يوم من الخط العربي أكثر من ٣٥٠ مبدعاً من حول العالم.
The 2021 and 2023 editions of 42 Days of Arabic Type challenge brought together over 350 creatives worldwide.
في عام ٢٠٢٣، حوّل المشارك محمد عبد الجواد مشاركاته في تحدي ٤٢ يوم إلى أول خط عربي متكامل له.
In 2023, participant Mohamed Abdel Gawad turned his 42DOAT challenge entries into his first complete Arabic font.
خلال نسختَي ٢٠٢١ و٢٠٢٣، نُشِر أكثر من ٥٠٠٠ عمل إبداعي باستخدام الهاشتاغات الرسمية للتحدّي.
During the 2021 and 2023 editions, more than 5,000 creative works were shared using the official challenge hashtags.

It's a place where tradition blends with experimentation, where professional designers and emerging talents work side by side, and where the beauty and versatility of Arabic letterforms can be celebrated and carried into new creative landscapes.
تُجسّد منصة ٤٢ يوم أكثر من مجرد أرشيف، فهي تُعدّ مورداً حيّاً ونابضاً للمصممين والمهتمين بالخطوط العربية.
إنه مكان تلتقي فيه التقاليد بروح التجريب، ويقف فيه المصمّمون المحتّرفون إلى جانب الموهوبين الصاعدين، وتُحتفى فيه بجماليات الحروف العربية وتنوّعها، وتُوجَّه نحو آفاق إبداعية جديدة.
